Custom logos, as the name suggests, are logos created specifically for a client according to the client's specifications.
Bigger logo design companies often have thousands of old, rejected logos that they pitch over and over again as custom logo concepts.
This is only OK if those designs are
- the company's own, original work,
- significantly different from the accepted concept and
- a close match for the client's spec.
Many designers choose to create all concepts from scratch. The ones not selected by the client are then sold as pre-designed logos at sites like LogoGround.com.
A custom logo is only really a requirement if you need something very, very specific. If you need a purple and orange striped monkey in your logo, then a custom logo is in your future. If you need something less specific (an abstract shape, a globe, a letter logo etc.) then you are likely to find a matching pre-designed logo that will save you time and money.
Custom logos go for between $150 and $10,000. Avoid offers under $150. Custom logos done properly take time. At under $150 you have to wonder if the designs you are being pitched are originals.
Cost is the biggest differentiator in custom logo design and design firms have different strategies for making their offers seem the least expensive. Watch out for hidden fees. Specifically, many companies offer few or no alterations and charge extra if the client needs to fine-tune the logo after the initial concepts are presented. When you think about it, they have a financial incentive to produce poor quality work initially and stretch the process out as long as possible. Always look for logo design firms that offer free, unlimited alterations. |
